Failure of a 20 something
Maybe the title of this post is a little dramatic. But I’m sure all you sewers out there know how difficult it is when you have a great vision for something and when you start making it up it just doesn’t go to plan? Stropping about it/ over dramatising the situation is typical.
I started this bag with all the best intentions for a beautiful circle bag, using a denim pencil skirt that was waaaaaaaayyyyyy to small on me. Making the best out of something that just wasn’t good. Oh my, do I wish now I just cut of the bottom and added it in panels to the side to make a wearable denim skirt that fits. Something I might actually wear.
It was going rather well until I forgot to add interfacing and attempted to add it in after. Then I burnt the bag (and my carpet) in an attempt to iron out the creases I made with the interfacing. Thus melting plastic onto the bag. What a nightmare. I then struggled to find any buckles/ buttons / straps, or just any finishes for that matter, that would give the bag the look I want.
Yes I don’t own an ironing board. A necessity really for someone who sews as much as I do. I know Im a rather unconventional sewer really and I might be offending some ‘by the book people’ by not owning an ironing board or by trying to add interfacing after making up. But hey ho, when your sewing for yoself you can break the rules. I follow them everyday in work to make industry standard clothes! I don’t have to do it for my own wardrobe!
1: I cut two circles and faced the top with a half circle
2: Adding the middle under the facing
3: How the middle looked flipped around
4: Added viseline to the middle in an attempt to stiffen
In the end though this bag just isn’t
really something I would wear. It doesn’t fit into my wardrobe at all. Not at the minute anyway. Couple that with my
hastiness to finish it that saw me make so many mistakes and I just cant even
bare to look at this project now. So I am starting a box. My ‘maybe another
time’ box. And I think I will put this
bag in there in the hope that Il be in a haberdashery one day and find the
perfect buckle or straps to finish this off and add it to my bag collection.
I thought I would post this because its
good to know that not everything goes to plan and unlike instagram not
everything is picture perfect. But maybe another time it will be!
Lots of Love, Maria!xx
